Under-15

Sealy, Reifer star as Foundation crush Lodge by an innings and 44 runs to recapture Under-15 title

Bridgetown, Barbados, August 2 - (www.bcacricket.org) - In what is arguably a very unique record in the history of the BCA Under-15 Championship, Foundation recaptured the title with yet another innings demolition of Milo Lodge.

The innings and 44-run victory on the third and last day of the 2018 Final at Desmond Haynes Oval today was the third time in as many Finals between the teams that Foundation had triumphed by an innings.

Back in 2005 and also in the month of August (16-18), the Church Hill, Christ Church school won by an innings and 120 runs at the Wildey ground when the long-standing Tournament was sponsored by Cable & Wireless, commonly known as well in subsequent years as Barbados External Telecommunications, LIME and FLOW.

The two older secondary schools again clashed in the 2016 showdown at Desmond Haynes Oval and Foundation were victorious by an innings and two runs with more than a day to spare after the match, like that 11 years earlier, co-incidentally started on August 16.

Significantly, a generation of the famous Reifer cricketing family featured in two of the Finals for Foundation.

Chad Reifer (later known as Chad Clarke-Reifer), a left-arm bowler and son of the former Barbados and English County Club Hampshire left-arm fast bowler, Elvis Reifer, who died suddenly on August 26, 2011 at the age of 50, played in the 2005 Final, taking three for 32 using the new ball in the first innings as Lodge fell for 108.

He then made 38 at No. 6 (the third highest score) in Foundation’s response of 340 all out of which Jamal Jordan hit a solid century (111) at No. 3 and Michael Holder, 54, at No. 4. Jordan followed by grabbing four for 17 off 15 overs to help send Lodge tumbling to 112 all out.

Now Jordan Reifer, also a son of Elvis, played a big role. Batting at No. 3, he slammed a memorable century - 157 - which came in 279 minutes off 232 balls and contained 15 fours and three sixes in a total of 351 all out, earning him the Player-of-the-Match award.

And there was a marked presence of his family. Apart from his mother, well-known radio personality Carol Roberts, who is also a product of Foundation, Jordan Reifer was watched by another of his brothers, all-rounder Raymon Reifer, who earned a Test cap for West Indies against New Zealand in Hamilton last December, and uncle Leslie Reifer snr., a former Barbados batsman, who is one of the most successful BCA top division captains with six titles for Police (1983, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1998 and 1999).

So much for history.

This was the third straight Final for Foundation, who were led on first innings by Combermere in a drawn battle at Dayrells Road last year.

Psychologically, they have a hold on Lodge and so it proved again.

Facing a deficit of 215 and starting the last day on 34 without loss off six overs, the Society, St. John boys were bowled out for 171 in 55.3 overs in their second innings.

The last nine wickets tumbled for 97 runs in exactly 36 overs as the match ended 39 minutes after tea.

Rodney Greenidge topscored with 49 in 93 minutes off 72 balls at No. 7. He hit four fours and one six.

Left-arm spinner Nathan Sealy was the main wrecker with six for 61 off 22 overs. He finished with match figures of nine for 86 off 35 overs.

Lodge were given an encouraging start by captain Hakeem Perryman and Nathan Forde, who added 63 in 15.4 overs for the first wicket before Forde was bowled by Sealy for 19 after starting the day on four.

Perryman, who resumed on 24, was then bowled by Sealy to make in 74 for two in the 20th over.

Sealy again struck when he had Devon Stevenson caught at silly point by Lamar Cox for one.

The next three wickets fell in quick succession.

Shomari Gittens was run out for three, Joshua Alkins was bowled by Sealy for four and Johann Layne was bowled by first innings destroyer, leg-spinner Isiah Folkes for 21 to leave the score 96 for six by the 29th over.

There was a recovery with Greenidge and Charleston Browne putting on 51 in 19.1 overs on either side of tea before the end came swiftly.

Browne was caught by wicket-keeper and skipper Jamario St. Hill off medium-pacer Kamario Grant for 12.

Jaden Lorde was bowled by Sealy for one, Greenidge was caught by St. Hill off Sealy and Shakir Waithe-Garnes was bowled by Grant for five, leaving Ty O’Neale not out on nought.
