UWI sweep to BCA Elite division title on final day of season
Bridgetown, Barbados, December 3 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Spurred by a fine all-round performance from veteran Ryan Hinds, Sagicor Life UWI swept to the BCA Elite division title with a crushing win by an innings and 75 runs over Crane Resort St. Catherine at 3Ws Oval on the final day of the 2017 season.
Faced with a first innings deficit of 144 after UWI carried their overnight score from 210 for eight to 249 for nine declared, St. Catherine, who were last year’s champions, crumbled for 69 in 22.1 overs.
They were undermined by left-arm spinner Hinds, who grabbed six for 14 off 9.1 overs following his fine century (105 off 126 balls including eight fours and five sixes) on the second day.
Hinds was supported by off-spinner Larry Joseph, who picked up four for 30 to end with match figures of ten for 87.
UWI finished on 114 points - 17 more than the only other pre-series title contenders ICBL Empire who were beaten by five wickets by Massy United Insurance Wildey on neutral turf at Bayfield.
There were also outright wins in the other matches as the focus turned to the Trents ground with home side Home Improvement & Hardware Supplies Maple and ESA Field Pickwick both battling to avoid relegation.
As it turned out, Pickwick lost by 86 runs and thus will be demoted to the First division for the second time in three seasons.
Set 171 to win, Pickwick were bowled out for 84 in 40.1 overs.
Massy Stores Spartan crushed Barbados Youth by ten wickets at Lester Vaughan and CounterPoint Wanderers beat BDFSP by 14 runs at Paragon.
It was the sixth three-day title for UWI since they were elevated to the top league in 2006. The others were in 2009, 2010 (shared with Spartan), 2011, 2012 and 2015.
