Springer smacks 77 not out in rain-ruined second Barbados Pride four-day practice match

Bridgetown, Barbados, October 5 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Shamar “Chest Roll” Springer, one of the heroes in the West Indies capture of the ICC Under-19 World Cup title in Bangladesh last year, looks set for a first-class debut in three weeks.

Displaying a cool head and good shot selection, all-rounder Springer hit an unbeaten 77 to join Aaron Jones as the only batsmen to score half-centuries in the badly rain-ruined second Barbados Pride four-day practice match at Bayfield.

With the entire third day’s play being washed out on Wednesday after only 12.1 overs were sent down the previous today, the 19-year-old Springer took advantage of the time available after there was not play in the pre-lunch session today because of damp areas on the outfield.

Resuming on 36 in a score of 69 for five off 25.1 overs by Kevin Stoute’s X1 after play started at 1 p.m., Springer stood firm as wickets fell around him.

He reached his half-century in 169 minutes off 109 balls with two fours by which time the score was 106 for seven in the 39th over.

Stoute’s X1 were bowled out for 146 off 51.5 overs on the stroke of tea in reply to a first innings total of 182 all out in 56.5 overs by Kenny Williams’ side.

All told, Springer batted for 209 minutes (exactly 100 minutes today), faced 142 balls and struck three fours and one six.

With the Cricket West Indies Professional Cricket League four-day Championship starting on October 26, he is virtually certain to make his debut against old rivals Trinidad & Tobago in a day/night pink ball match at Kensington Oval.

Springer’s overnight partner, left-hander Mario Rampersaud was leg before by the tall left-arm pacer Dominic Drakes for 12 after resuming on nought to end a partnership of 34.

Drakes, the son of former Barbados and West Indies fast bowling all-rounder Vasbert Drakes, struck again in the fifth ball of his next over when experienced left-hander Jonathan Carter edged a pull to wicket-keeper Carlos Maynard after scoring two.

Sulieman Benn, the 36-year-old left-arm spinner with international experience in all formats of the game, removed West Indies limited overs off-spinning all-rounder Ashley Nurse (13) to a catch at short extra-cover by Justin Greaves as the batsman drove.

Off-spinning all-rounder Williams then wrapped up the innings by snatching the wickets of Jerome Jones (eight) and Chaim Holder (nought).

Williams’ X1 were 78 for two off 22.5 overs in their second innings when the match ended eight minutes before schedule after big-hitter Alcindo Holder smashed off-spinner Jameel Stuart for a straight six at the southern end. The pink ball, which was used in the post-tea session, landed in thick grass and could not be found.

Holder was unbeaten on 22 with Zachary McCaskie on 27.

Fast bowler Keon Harding removed Barbados Pride opener, left-hander Anthony Alleyne for three to a catch at mid-on and Rashidi Boucher was spectacularly caught at extra-cover by Leniko Boucher off pacer Jarion Hoyte for 16.
