WICB 4 Day Tournament

Aaron Jones impresses with half-century as second Barbados Pride practice match opens

Bridgetown, Barbados, October 2 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Middle order batsman Aaron Jones impressed with a commanding half-century in another generally below par batting display on the opening day of the second Barbados Pride four-day practice match at Bayfield.

The 22-year-old Jones topscored with 63 in a first innings total of 182 all out off 56.5 overs by Kenroy Williams’ X1 after they won the toss against Kevin Stoute’s X1, who closed on 34 for three off 13 overs.

Jones and Williams featured in a sixth wicket partnership of 77 in 84 minutes but there was a collapse after both were removed in the space of three deliveries by off-spinner Chaim Holder, as the last five wickets fell for 24 runs in 17.4 overs.

Pulling at a short ball, Williams was leg before wicket for 36, which came off 77 balls and contained just one boundary.

Jones, the Massy United Insurance Wildey captain, is no doubt seeking to recapture his early form in the BCA Elite division three-day Championship, which brought him a century (131) off CounterPoint Wanderers in the first round and 81 off Crane Resort St. Catherine in his next innings - both at SJPP.

Last season, he was in the Barbados Pride Draft squad but still did not make his first-class debut. Now wary that imminent tours by West Indies to Zimbabwe and New Zealand will open a couple places in the middle, he batted with determination and executed some well-timed strokes.

Jones reached his half-century in 126 minutes off 81 balls with eight boundaries by which time the score was 128 for five off 29 overs. Williams was then 18.

But Jones would have been disappointed in the manner he lost his wicket just after his captain fell. Trying to hit over the top, he was brilliantly caught by West Indies Under-19 team left-arm spinner Joshua Bishop, who had to turn and run back before holding the ball inches from the ground.

Jones batted for 164 minutes, faced 103 ball and struck nine fours.

Earlier, there was a disastrous start for Williams’ side.

Barbados Pride player Anthony Alleyne was run out without scoring off the fourth ball of the match and two balls later, Zachary McCaskie was bowled by pacer Shakeem Clarke, also for a duck.

Alcindo Holder was then caught and bowled by fast bowler Keon Harding for five to leave the score eight for three in the fourth over.

Rashidi Boucher, the leading batsman in the Elite division this season with 405 runs for Massy Stores Spartan, played positively. He drove big left-arm pacer Jerome Jones for a straight six which landed some distance back in thick grass at the southern end.

After the ball could not be found, a new one was used. And with the very first delivery, Boucher, who made 27 off 37 balls in just over an hour, edged it high to the slips where it was parried for Kyle Corbin to take the catch.

In a shortened lunch session following a late start, the score was 78 for four off 17 overs with Aaron Jones on 29 and Tevyn Walcott, 11.

Walcott fell in the fifth ball after the interval, neatly stumped by Mario Rampersaud off leg-spinner Nikolai Charles for 13.

Then came the fightback by Aaron Jones and Williams before the collapse set in.

At tea the score was 159 for seven off 41 overs with Ryan Wiggins on one and Justin Greaves, nought.

A pink ball was used for the last session.

Wiggins was bowled by medium-pacer Shamar Springer for three and Clarke returned from the Trevor Clarke end at the south to grab the last two wickets. He breached the defence of Greaves to bowl him for 15 and had left-hander Carlos Maynard, leg before wicket for six to be the leading wicket-taker with three for 26 off 6.5 overs.

Chaim Holder took two for 20 off 12 overs.

His namesake, pacer Chemar Holder, soon bowled impressively from the Neville Mason end to prise out Leniko Boucher (three) and the in-form Shayne Moseley (five).

Leniko Boucher, who is Chemar Holder’s Sagicor Life UWI team-mate, was bowled for three while left-hander Moseley was well caught low at cover-point by Aaron Jones as he drove.

In between, left-hander Jameel Stuart edged seamer Javon Searles for Ryan Wiggins to take the catch in the slips in bizarre fashion. The ball first hit the hands of Alleyne at first slip and then  painfully struck Holder, at second slip, on the head before lobbing to Wiggins at third slip.

Springer will resume on 15 with Stoute on seven.

The match is in preparation for the regional first-class Championship, which starts October 26.
