UWI set to clinch BCA Intermediate division title after woeful Empire batting

Bridgetown, Barbados, November 5 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Sagicor Life UWI have virtually clinched the 2016 BCA Intermediate division title after a pathetic batting performance by ICBL Empire on a rain-hit third day at KMV Oval, Lakes, in the rustic parish of St. Andrew today.

After play belatedly started at 3:45 p.m. due to very heavy rain which swept across the island from early in the morning, Empire, batting with two players short, fell for just 50 in 29 overs from an overweek 27 for two replying to a first innings total of 245 all out.

Former long-standing Division 1 player Shawn Graham, who also played at the first-class level, topscored with 15 after starting the day on 13.

Skipper Carleon Brome was the only other double-figure contributor with 11.

Quadre Smith grabbed five for 28 off 12 overs and Larry Edward, three for nine off five overs.

Following-on, Empire will go into the final day tomorrow on ten for one, having lost Kevin King for four to former Barbados and West Indies left-arm pacer Pedro Collins, who is a UWI coach.

UWI owed their now healthy first innings total mainly to opener Kamil Pooran, a Trinidadian who slammed 122 in 174 minutes off 119 balls with ten fours.

Pooran featured in a fourth wicket partnership of 148 with former West Indies Test captain Floyd Reifer, the veteran UWI head coach, who made 62 in 91 minutes off 76 deliveries with six fours and one six.

The last seven wickets had sensationally fallen for only 19 runs.

Seamer Andre Evelyn took six for 62 off 19 overs and his new ball partner, left-armer Ian Perryman, two for 30 off 7.3 overs.
