Carlos Brathwaite among three top players to decline WI contracts
St. John's, Antigua, November 2 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Relatively new West Indies Twenty20 captain Carlos Brathwaite is among three current players who have declined central contracts offered by the West Indies Cricket Board for the period 2016-17.
The list of centrally-contracted players is down to 12 after the WICB had increased it from 12 to 15 in January for the period 2015-16.
Informed sources said that Barbadian Brathwaite, a 28-year-old fast bowling all-rounder, who was appointed the T20 captain in August after playing only eight matches at that level, has been offered lucrative T20 contracts around the world.
The burly Brathwaite rose to fame in the final of the T20 World Cup Championship against England in India in April when with 19 runs needed off the very last over from pacer Ben Stokes, he hit slammed four consecutive sixes from the start of the over to seal a memorable win for West Indies by four wickets.
Brathwaite is in the West Indies squad for a Tri-nation One-Day International series in Zimbabwe this month but is listed to play for Barisal Bulls in the Bangladesh Premier League which starts this weekend, as well as for a franchise in the Australia's Big Bash League, which begins in December.
The central contracts for women range from US$12,000 to US$30,000; while the contracts for men range from US$100,000 to US$150,000. The contract for the period is based on performances from October 1, 2015 to September 2016.
The WICB also has 90 additional players on contract for the six franchises and their salaries range from US$15,600 to $30,000. Those players are part of the first-class set-up. The 4-Day Professional Cricket League begins next Friday, November 11 with matches in Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and St Kitts. The Super 50 is scheduled for January to February 2017.
Separate arrangements are on offer for the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) the region’s Twenty20 domestic league and those packages range from US$5,000 to US$160,000.
