EXCLUSIVE: Wiggins, Ross set remarkable new marks in record-breaking BCA Super Cup season

Bridgetown, Barbados, October 26 - (www.bcacricket.org) - In a truly amazing record-breaking season, Ryan Wiggins and Nkosi Ross of new champions Young Men's Progressive Club (YMPC) fittingly set unprecedented highs with bat and ball in four-and-half decades of the top BCA limited overs Competition.

Without a sponsor for the first time since its inception in 1972 when it was known as the Derrick Robins Tournament before Barbados Fire & Commercial Insurance Co. Ltd (later renamed Sagicor General) took over three years later, the outstanding feats in 88 scheduled Super Cup matches in 2016 between April 30 and August 7 can never be forgotten.

Wiggins, a 32-year-old whole-hearted player with first-class experience and whose first taste of a major local domestic competition was 16 years ago when he represented Combined Schools South as a student of Foundation in the First division (rebranded Elite division in 2012) Championship, became the first ever batsman to amass 500 runs in a season in the top one-day Tournament, which moved from a 40-over after 29 seasons to a 50-over in 2001.

In 11 matches, Wiggins finished with 526 runs including one century and four half-centuries, at an average of 47.26. Competing in Zone 'B, he made 125 against Ince Transport MTW at Pine Basin in the third series, with half-centuries of 62 v IGS Insurance Brokers Yorkshire at Beckles Road (Series 2); 63 v CounterPoint Wanderers at Beckles Road (Series 4); 81 v BDFSP at Beckles Road (Series 5) and 83 off dethroned champions Sagicor Life UWI at 3Ws Oval (semi-finals).

Just one year after the Tournament was established as a 50-over, the record for the most runs in a season was set by Philo Wallace, a former Spartan and Barbados captain, who also played for West Indies.

A pugnacious opener, Wallace scored 422 runs (ave: 52.75) including two centuries in eight matches in 2002.

The record remained for ten seasons before Renaldo "Baby" Parris of Maple broke it in 2012 by scoring 426 runs (ave: 47.33) in ten matches.

Then only last year, left-hander Jameel "Salty" Stuart, the BDFSP captain, put his name in the record books with an aggregate of 445 runs (ave: 49.44) in 12 matches in which be batted ten times with one not out.

Wiggins' outstanding performance prompted the Barbados Pride selectors to belatedly invite him to national trials for the 2016-17 WICB Professional Cricket League first-class and 50-over Tournaments, and he duly responded by scoring 77 in the third and final four-day practice match at Weymouth recently.

Six-footer Ross, 26, an underrated left-arm spinner, grabbed the most wickets ever (30) in a season. In 11 matches, he bowled the most overs all told (93.3) at a remarkable economy rate of 2.98. His average was 9.30.

A former student of The St. Michael School and Barbados Community College, Ross grabbed two 'five-fors'  - five for 21 against BDFSP, and five for 41 against Brathwaite Construction/Crane Resort St. Catherine at Bayfield in the opening round - as well as two four-wicket hauls.

The previous record for the most wickets (23) in a Championship had been jointly held by leg-spinner Dave Marshall, a former Spartan and Barbados player and off-spinner Don O'neal of Maple.

Marshall, now the Spartan coach, established the record in eight matches in 2002 (he bowled 64.2 overs) when he captained Spartan to their eighth one-day title, which is still the record for the most titles despite the fact that the Queen's Club has not tasted success since, while O'neal equalled it in 2012, sending down 64.5 overs in nine matches.

That YMPC now play in the First division (formerly known as Upper Intermediate) after they were demoted at the end of the 2011 season and are yet to return to the top league, made their title success which ended a 21-year drought, as well as producing the two record-breakers in Wiggins and Ross, even more telling.

YMPC beat Maple by 39 runs in the final at the Windward Club ground, Lucas Street in St. Philip on August 7. It was only their second title in six finals, having triumphed against Spartan by 27 runs in the 1995 showdown at Kensington Oval under the captaincy of wicket-keeper/batsman Mark Estwick.

There were at least two other individual record-breaking performances.

Chadwick Walton of UWI became only the second batsman ever to slam a double-century and Gladiola (formerly LIME) off-spinner Daley Hurley pencilled in his name as only the second bowler ever as well to take eight wickets in a match - both in Zone 'A'.

And both upstaged the previous holders of the records.

Walton, a 30-year-old Jamaican who is currently representing West Indies 'A' against Sri Lanka 'A' in their three-match, unofficial One-Day International series in Sri Lanka, blasted 207 off 144 balls with 16 fours and 12 sixes against Carlton at 3Ws Oval in Series 6.

Dale Richards, a former Barbados and West Indies opener, is the other player with a double-century - 202 for Carlton against Banks (now Massy United Insurance Wildey) at Black Rock (renamed Desmond Haynes Oval) in 2006.

Hurley took eight for 13 against Nicholls Baking Combermere at Kingsland in the sixth round.

Philip Browne, a seamer, had held the record for the best figures of eight for 19 for Spartan against BDFSP at Paragon in 2003.

There were a whopping 22 centuries, erasing the previous highest number (14) in 2014.

Kyle Mayers of Carlton and Maple's Shane Parris both scored two centuries.

Like Walton, Mayers is also now representing West Indies 'A' in Sri Lanka.

UWI established a new record for the highest ever score - 418 for seven off 50 overs against Wildey, who lost by a massive 302 runs at 3Ws Oval in the fourth round.

It surpassed the 416 for eight by BDFSP against BCL at Paragon in 2015 in the second round.

UWI's ruthless onslaught was underlined by the fact that they also became the first team ever to amass over 400 twice, rattling up 417 for six against Carlton in that sixth round match when Walton was on fire.

Also of great significance was a unique record set by Shai Hope of ESA Field Pickwick.

Wicket-keeper/batsman Hope, now in the United Arab Emirates with the West Indies team for the three-Test series against Pakistan, is the only batsman ever to finish with an average of over 100 in three consecutive seasons - two of which he topped the overall averages (2014 and 2016).

In 2014, Hope scored 331 runs (ave: 165.50) in seven matches; 2015 - 211 runs (ave: 105.50) in four matches and 2016 - 312 runs (ave: 104.00) in eight matches.

His remarkable statistics in those three years show 854 runs from 19 innings including 12 not outs, at an average of 122.00.

No wonder, with a such an outstanding production in the island's major one-day domestic competition, he now finds himself in the West Indies ODI squad for the first time as the wicket-keeper/batsman, for a Tri-nation series in Zimbabwe next month.
