Aaliyah Alleyne helps leaders Pride to second win in Iris Walker T20 tourney
Bridgetown, Barbados, January 27 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Playing under new sponsors M.PACT and Powerade, the Barbados Under-19 and Senior team flamboyant Women's player Aaliyah Alleyne helped in securing a six-wicket win for M.PACT Pat Whittaker Pride in a low-scoring match against Powerade Angela Harris Tridents in the Iris Walkers Memorial Twenty20 tournament.
It was the second victory in as many matches for Pride, lifting them to eight points at the top of the three-team table.
In overcast conditions and a very appreciative crowd at the Bridge field ground in St. Thomas on Sunday, Pride, with a mere 70 runs needed off their 20 overs, opened the batting with captain Kycia Knight and Danielle Small, who took the score to 11 before Knight was bowled by Shamilia Connell for five.
Next at the wicket was Krystal Harewood but she was out three balls later without troubling the score, giving Connell her second wicket.
Aaliyah Alleyne then joined Small and together they built a solid partnership of 40, taking the score to 55 for three off 9.4 overs before Hayley Matthews took a beautiful low catch off her own bowling to dismiss Small for 18 from 32 balls including two fours.
With Small's departure and needing just 15 runs to win, coming off an exciting knock of 44 in the first match, Savyair Byron-Toney came to the crease but managed only eight before she was run out by Matthews off a wide from Dottin, with the score on 68 off 12.5 overs.
Former West Indies player Pamela Lavine came in to bat next, but as the batsmen had crossed she was yet to face, and Alleyne was given the task of taking the Pride to glory.
During her partnership with Small, Alleyne played some powerful strokes through the offside, one of which was a classy boundary through extra-cover off Maynard. Alleyne was then left with the task of getting the final two runs, but could only manage a single off the last ball of Dottin’s fourth and final over.
Captain Knight, hoping for a miracle, turned to her opening pace bowler Connell who took up the bowling from the northern end, previously bowling her first three overs from the south for just for 14 runs and picking up two wickets. Alleyne faced two dot balls from her, before she played the ball through cover for the winning run in an unbeaten 26 off 32 balls with three fours.
Earlier, the Tridents were restricted to just 69 off 16.1 overs in a dismal batting display. First to go was Matthews, brilliantly stumped by Kycia Knight for five off Shanna Thompson with the score on 14 in the second over.
Disaster struck three overs later with Dottin, who was slowly getting into her stride playing the ball with an ease and purpose, found herself at her partner’s end looking in her face in a terrible mix-up and was run out by Isobella Burnham for 11.
With this key wicket gone, Tridents just could not recover and lost wickets steadily. Medium-pacer Lavine did the brunt of the damage, taking three for ten off three overs including a maiden. She bowled both opener Knight for 20 and Lopez for nought in successive balls off her first over, and took a brilliant catch off the fifth ball, off her own bowling, that of Connell who also failed to score.
With half of the team down, Shanika Bruce came to the crease and tried without success to put together a partnership. She could only watch from the other end as one after the other she saw her partners walking in and out of the pavilion before she herself was stumped off a wide by Knight for the only other double figures of the innings (12) off Shalite Lopez .
Lopez ended with two for four off 1.1 overs, ably assisted by Isobella Burnham who bowled her three overs for a miserly seven runs and took two wickets.
