Maynard, Matthews spur Tridents to 9-wicket win over Blackbirds in Walker one-day tournament

Bridgetown, Barbados, January 25 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Following a six-wicket haul by Kyann Maynard, a brisk, unbroken partnership of 89 between teenager Hayley Matthews and pugnacious West Indies Women's all-rounder Deandra Dottin, spurred Powerade Angela Harris Tridents to an emphatic nine-wicket win against Sagicor UWI Blackbirds in the second round of the BCA Iris Walker limited overs tournament.

Playing in the rain-hit match at the picturesque KMV Oval in the parish of St. Andrew, Tridents, chasing 106 to win off 42 overs, got home in only 19.5 overs to record their second victory.

They again opened with captain Kyshona Knight and Matthews before rain stopped play for about 15 minutes with the score six without loss in 1.3 overs.

On resumption, Knight, who made 66 in the first match against MPact Pat Whittaker Pride, was soon bowled by her West Indies Women's team-mate, fast bowler Shakira Selman for three with the score on 17.

This, however, would be the only wicket that the Blackbirds would capture as Matthews and Dottin featured in a very well-constructed and entertaining partnership.

Matthews made 59 not out off 66 balls including three fours, while Dottin, in typically attacking style, smashed 38 not out off 35 balls including two fours. Matthews hit the winning run, playing the ball through mid-wicket off Ashli Antoine.

The match started an hour late due to rainy conditions and UWI Blackbirds rallied to 105 all out in 32 overs.

With no initial reduction of the allotted 50 overs, play finally commenced at 10.41 a.m. Only 1.3 overs were bowled with the Blackbirds being one run for one wicket - that of Malissa Howard - when another shower came at 10.48 and play was again held up for approximately 33 minutes.

On resumption with the overs reduced to 42, Blackbirds lost their next two wickets, those of Antoine (three), and opener Shaquana Quintyne (17), both to medium-pacer Dottin with the score on 20 and 36 respectively.

Reshelle Griffith was joined by Charlene Taitt, but she, too, lost her wicket with the score on 42, giving Maynard the first of her six-wicket haul.

This brought captain Selman to the crease and she and Taitt added 61 in a sixth-wicket partnership, taking the score to 103 before Selman fell to Maynard on 23 from 57 balls.

Taitt, with 26 off 58 balls, was out run out by Bruce in the next two balls after a bad mix-up with Jessica Holder-Vaughan without a run added.

After the loss of Taitt, wickets then fell steadily. Kyann Maynard, after a shaky start bowling her medium-pace, took the last wicket - Fagan for nought - to end with six for 20 runs off eight overs.
