Debutants St. Michael Alumni beat Police by 60 runs in Foundation Joel Garner T20 competition

Bridgetown, Barbados, January 23 - (www.bcacricket.org) - The St. Michael School Alumni made an impressive debut in the sixth annual Christ Church Foundation School Joel Garner Twenty20 tapeball tournament with a 60-run win against Police at Dover on Wednesday night.

Once an all-girls school which was founded in 1928 before becoming co-educational in 1979, St. Michael, boasting several well-known players who take part in major BCA competitions, amassed 181 for seven off 20 overs after winning the toss in the Irvine King/Hugh Barker Zone 'C' encounter.

Jameel "Salty" Stuart, who captained Barbados in last year's regional Under-19 three-day and limited overs championships in St. Kitts, topscored with 48 as an opener. He faced 49 balls and hit five fours and one six.

Left-hander Stuart and Junior Moore (15) put on 45 in 7.4 overs for first wicket before St. Michael slipped to 57 for three in the 10th over.

But Stuart and vice-captain Ulric Batson rebuilt the innings with a hurricane fourth-wicket partnership of 84 in only six overs before Stuart was caught by wicket-keeper Levi Cadogan off pacer Trevor Ifill.

Batson, a seasoned Republic Bank St. Catherine representative, and fellow fast bowling all-rounder and skipper Jared Gilkes, who plays for ESA Field Pickwick, then added 30 off just eight balls before Batson was bowled by left-arm pacer Larry Babb, a former Barbados T20 player, for 46 off 32 balls. Batson slammed four sixes and three fours.

Gilkes made 16 off 11 balls with two fours and one six, falling in the last ball of the innings, bowled by Chad Linton.

Linton took two for 17 off two overs and Babb, two for 23 off four overs.

Police, who have played in every tournament since its inception in 2009 as part of the 200th anniversary of Foundation School, were putting up a fight when they passed 100 with only three wickets down in the 13th over.

But the dismissal of all-rounder Larando Best, caught by wicket-keeper Moore off Gilkes for the topscore of 39 off 34 balls with six fours, triggered a dramatic collapse.

The last seven wickets tumbled for 17 runs in five overs as Gilkes and Batson came into their own and Police were bowled out for 121 in 18 overs.

Gilkes took four for 11 off four overs and Batson, two for 15 off three overs including the scalp of Babb for 21 off 17 balls including two sixes.

Pacer Shakeem Clarke, who grabbed the first three wickets including Richard Greaves (14) and skipper Roger Williams (one), ended with three for 22 off four overs. Clarke is the son of the late Barbados and West Indies fast bowler Sylvester Clarke.

Batson and Gilkes shared the $100 man-of-the-match award, compliments of The Baron's Smokehouse at Chattel Village in St. Lawrence Gap.

St. Michael Alumni are one of three newcomers - the others are Louis Lynch Old Scholars and Grantley Adams Old Scholars - in the 16-team tournament.

The tournament continues on Friday with a double-header, again at Dover, in the Lee Harford Skeete/Lewiston Wellington Zone 'A'. Princess Margaret Old Scholars will oppose Alexandra Old Scholars at 6.30 p.m and Alleyne Alumni, runners-up in 2011 and 2013, meet Combermere Old Scholars at 9.30 p.m.
