Spinners Warrican, Austin shine on first day of CCC two-day trial
Bridgetown, Barbados, January 23 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Spinners Jomel Warrican and Ryan Austin shared nine wickets as Raymon Reifer's XI were bowled out for 199 in 77.2 overs in their first innings on the first day of a two-day Combined Campuses & Colleges (CCC) trial match against Steven Jacobs' XI at 3Ws Oval on Wednesday.
By stumps, Jacobs' XI were nine without loss off three overs.
Left-armer Warrican, who performed outstandingly with the ball in three recent CCC limited overs trial matches but was unlucky not be be selected for the WICB NAGICO Super50 tournament in Trinidad & Tobago from January 30 to February 15, grabbed five for 49 off 23.2 overs, while veteran off-spinner Austin took four for 50 off 21 overs.
Opener Shayne Moseley, a member of the champion 2012 Barbados Under-19 team in the regional three-day championship, topscored with 43.
A nephew of former Barbados and Somerset County fast bowler Hallam Moseley, left-hander Moseley batted for 99 minutes, faced 84 balls and struck five fours and one six.
Moseley and former Jamaica Under-19 team captain Paul Palmer added 54 for the first wicket before Palmer fell for 16. Both Moseley and Palmer were victims of the 32-year-old Austin, who played two Tests for West Indies against Bangladesh in the Caribbean in 2009.
Floyd Reifer, the 41-year-old CCC player/coach and former Barbados batsman and West Indies captain, who indicated last year that he had retired from first-class cricket, made 35 in 92 minutes off 68 balls with six fours, at No. 7.
A well-placed source, however, said Floyd Reifer is playing in the match to gain practice for the NAGICO Super50 tournament of which he is a member of the CCC 14-man squad named last week.
All-rounder Kavem Hodge of Dominica contributed a painstaking 33. He was at the crease for 190 minutes, received 147 balls and counted two boundaries before he was leg before wicket by the 21-year-old Warrican, who represented West Indies Under-19s at the ICC Youth World Cup in New Zealand four years ago.
Play started late at 11.02 a.m because of rain.
The match is in preparation for the 2014 regional first-class championship, which begins February 28.
