Foundation 'A' crush newcomers Louis Lynch by 105 runs in Foundation Joel Garner T20 opener

Bridgetown, Barbados, January 21 - (www.bcacricket.org) - It was a rough baptism for Louis Lynch Old Scholars as they lost by 105 runs to title holders Foundation 'A' Old Scholars in the opening match of the sixth annual Christ Church Foundation School Joel Garner Twenty20 tapeball tournament at Dover on Monday night.

Playing before an appreciative crowd including Garner, the outstanding former Barbados captain and West Indies fast bowler, who is patron of the tournament, and another well-known former Foundation student in comedian Trevor "Dynamite" Eastmond, who had all and sundry in stitches throughout and soon after the match ended when he really turned it on, Louis Lynch could, however, take some comfort in a solid fan base of old scholars and supporters.

Originally known as Roebuck Secondary, some of their fans wore shirts with the words "Roebuck Crew". It was a wonderful atmosphere off the field but in the middle, Louis Lynch were simply 'lynched'.

After winning the toss in the Lewin/Gilpin Jones Brothers Zone 'B' clash, Foundation 'A', propelled by an opening partnership of 70 in only 7.2 overs between Ricardo Yearwood and captain Michael Matthews, raced to 189 for seven off 20 overs.

Yearwood, who played some breath-taking strokes, topscored with 35 off 27 balls including six fours, while Matthews made 29 off 21 deliveries, striking three fours and two sixes before he was first out.

The other batsmen reaching double-figures were Amory Holder (27), Shane Browne (19) and Renaldo Arthur and Jabarri Yarde (17 each).

Louis Lynch were soon under pressure when Michael "Stubby The Guard" Bowen, was bowled by gifted Barbados and West Indies Under-19 team fast bowling all-rounder Jofra Archer for nought in the third ball of the innings.

They stumbled to 34 for five by the seventh over with their best batsman Vonrick Nurse among the victims, for ten.

Skipper Zahir Motara and Roland McConney were the joint topscorers with 13, the latter being not out as Louis Lynch limped to 84 all out in 17.1 overs.

Left-arm pacer Michael Holder took two for nine off three overs and seamer Damien Farley, two for 21 off four overs.

Yearwood was named man-of-the-match and earned a $100 cash award from The Baron's Smokehouse at Chattel Village, St. Lawrence Gap.

The prize was presented by managing director of Baron's Smokehouse, Collis Williams, who announced that there will be similar awards for all of the matches in the 2014 competition.

Eastmond, a gifted all-rounder for Foundation in the 1970s, underlined why he is one of the top comedians in the world by keeping the crowd well entertained after the match. It could not have been better.

The tournament continues on Wednesday, January 22 with Police opposing St. Michael Old Scholars in the Irvine King/Hugh Barker Zone 'C' at Dover at 7 p.m.

St. Michael, Louis Lynch and Grantley Adams Memorial are the new teams this year.

On Friday, January 24, there will be the usual double-header, again at Dover. Princess Margaret meet Alexandra at 6.30 p.m. and Alleyne, the 2011 and 2013 losing finalists, clash with Combermere at 9.30 p.m. - both in the Lee Harford Skeete/Lewiston Wellington Zone 'A'.
