Aggressive Archer hits 86 to give Foundation edge over Isolation in BCA Intermediate division final

Bridgetown, Barbados, December 21 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Inspirational Barbados and West Indies Under-19 team fast bowling all-rounder Jofra Archer hit a splendid, attacking 86 at No. 9 and picked up one wicket to help give Christ Church Foundation School the edge over Rocklyn Hardware Isolation Cavaliers with one day remaining in the 2013 BCA Intermediate division final at Foursquare Oval.

Replying to a first innings total of 269 all out, Isolation Cavaliers, helped by two dropped catches, closed the third day on 87 for two with ace batsman Dale Richards among the victims for 15.

Isolation Cavaliers would have fancied their chances of dismissing Foundation for under 200 after grabbing the wicket of Xavier Duncan off the day's first ball when they resumed on 153 for six.

But Archer, who had a relatively good all-round season for Guardian General Barbados Youth in this year's BCA LIME Elite division championship, counter-attacked with some fine strokes and solid assistance from the lower order.

After Duncan was leg before wicket by medium-pacer Jamel Carter for three, Archer joined fellow national Under-19 team wicket-keeper/batsman Carlos Maynard. The pair added 36 before left-hander Maynard, who started the day on 36, was well caught low at second slip by Richards off pacer Hallam Bryan for 42.

Archer and established West Indies Under-19 team left-arm fast bowler Jerome Jones, who bats right-handed, then featured in a vital ninth wicket partnership of 57 before Jones was caught at cover off Jeremy Bowen for 16 shortly before tea.

Archer, who scored 249 runs at an average of 62.25 (the second highest overall average) and took 19 wickets at 17.36 runs apiece in six matches in the Elite division championship, looked set for what would have been a well-deserved century when he pulled a short ball from medium-pacer Jermaine Bullen into the hands of mid-on.

All told, Archer batted for 134 minutes, faced 102 and struck five fours and two sixes after reaching his half-century in 78 minutes off 66 balls with three fours and two sixes.

Bowen took three for 36 and Bryan, three for 47.

Swing bowler Nhamo Winn, the Foundation player/coach, should have had a wicket off the fourth ball of the Isolation Cavaliers reply but Aaron Jones, one of five Barbados Under-19 team players in the side, missed a regulation catch at second slip offered by Renaldo Holder.

Urged on by vocal, well-known comedian Trevor Eastmond, a former top Foundation Intermediate division all-rounder in the 1970s, Foundation celebrated in a big way when Richards, the former Barbados and West Indies opener who came into the match with a double-century (203 not out) and a century (122) in the semi-finals against Barbados Defence Force at Friendship, was dismissed.

Pulling at the very first ball from Jerome Jones, who was operating from the northern end after being brought on as the fourth bowler, Richards lobbed a catch to short midwicket in Micah Howard.

Richards' dismissal led to Eastmond further entertaining the crowd in the Pavilion with some of his top-class jokes.

Aaron Jones also soon put down another "sitter" in the slips offered by Bowen off Jerome Jones before with some relief, he caught Holder at extra-cover off Archer for 27.

At the close, the not out batsmen were Bowen on 27 and Kevin Vaughan on six with the latter indicating he would produce a big score tomorrow.
