St. Lucy Pirates upset UWI Blackbirds by 5 wickets in UWI Inter-Parish T20 championship
Bridgetown, Barbados, November 20 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Spurred by an even half-century from opener Richard Greaves and a last-over blast by Reydon Toppin, St. Lucy Pirates upset a first-class studded UWI Blackbirds by five wickets with one ball remaining in the third match of the 2013 UWI CO Williams Inter-Parish Twenty20 tournament.
Playing at 3Ws Oval on Tuesday night, St. Lucy showed that the shortest version of the game can be a lottery as they chased 131 in the full allotment of 20 overs to jolt a UWI team boasting as many as eight players with first-class experience.
Greaves' 50 came off 41 balls and included two sixes and one four before he was third out with the score 85, but Toppin took the spotlight in the very last over sent down by fast bowler Kevin McClean when he hammered 15 not out in the only four balls he faced, of 16 runs needed, in partnership with Brian Corbin.
Operating from the Roberts & Holding end at the north, McClean was hit to the fine-leg boundary off the first ball. The second was struck over long-on for another four, the third produced one run through the covers, Corbin picked up a single to deep square-leg off the fourth and Toppin duly swung the fifth over long-on for six.
McClean, a first-class cap, finished with one for 37 off 3.5 overs.
Guyanese all-rounder Chandrapaul Hemraj, a member of the Sagicor West Indies High Performance Centre, scored 22 at No. 4.
Left-arm medium-pacer Raymon Reifer took two for 24 off three overs.
UWI Blackbirds made 130 for eight after winning the toss.
Gifted Barbadian left-hander Anthony Alleyne, a former West Indies Under-19 team player, who made his first-class debut this year for Combined Campuses & Colleges, topscored with 27 off 33 balls including two boundaries before he was run out.
His opening partner Simon Naitram contributed 25 off only 13 balls with three fours and one six in a partnership of 28.
Veteran Floyd Reifer, a former West Indies captain, made 24 off 14 deliveries, striking three sixes, while Windward Islands player, Dominican Kavem Hodge got 20 off 16 balls with two fours and Raymon Reifer (19) off the same number of balls.
Hemraj took two for 12 and former Barbados T20 left-arm pacer Larry Babb, two for 17 - both off four overs.
