St. Catherine stun UWI with 128-run win as race for BCA Elite division title remains tight

Bridgetown, Barbados, September 15 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Republic Bank St. Catherine hit back to stun title holders Sagicor Life UWI by 128 runs at 3Ws Oval as they significantly jumped from relegation worries to sixth place in the table of a most intriguing 2013 BCA LIME Elite division championship with one series to be completed.

But UWI, in suffering their first defeat in three years in the island's top domestic competition, still remain in contention with two other teams - ICBL Empire and CGI Maple - for the coveted title which they have held for the last four seasons.

Empire, who led the table for most of the season before being overtaken by Maple in the previous round, eased back to the top on 93 points - just two ahead of the St. James team after taking first innings in their key clash at Bank Hall.

UWI are third on 82 points and though ESA Field Pickwick crushed bottom-of-the-table Guardian General Barbados Youth by eight wickets at Foursquare Oval to move to 81 points, based on what transpired on the opening day of the interrupted first series on May 4 and which continues on September 28 and 29, Pickwick have only a very slender mathematical chance of taking the title.

There is apparently still contention over the outcome of the first round match between Carlton and Empire at Desmond Haynes Oval. Both teams had arranged to play on the original dates of May 11 and 12 after the BCA postponed play in all of its matches on those dates because of the final of the WICB first-class championship between Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago at Kensington Oval.

As it turned out, there was no further play in the Carlton-Empire match due to the absence of umpires. It is no longer listed to be played in the rescheduled BCA fixtures and the BCA also wrote to both clubs on the issue.

Over the weekend, however, news broke that Empire were seeking arbitration on the matter, leading to further suspense as to the outcome.

At 3Ws Oval:

St. Catherine must still be celebrating a most famous win - their first of the season - which lifted them from second last in the table going into this round to 61 points.

Starting the day on 215 for three in their second innings after being led on first innings by 13 runs, St. Catherine batted solidly to score 302 for eight declared shortly after tea.

All-rounder Kenroy Williams sustained his fine form with the bat, hitting the topscore of 65.

Set 290 to win in a minimum of 30 overs, UWI were bowled out for 161 in 31.3 overs - nine minutes before the scheduled close at 5.30 p.m. - when off-spinner Williams had Nekoli Parris caught at short-leg.

Left-arm spinner and skipper Derick Bishop was the main wrecker with six for 51 off 11 overs to remain the leading wicket-taker for the season with 48 scalps, while Williams completed a wonderful all-round match, picking up three for 54 for a tally of seven for 93 plus two half-centuries.

It was the first defeat for UWI since November 2010 when they lost to Banks by six wickets at 3Ws Oval in the Division 1 championship (rebranded Elite from 2012).

At Foursquare Oval:

Left-arm spinner Kemar Stanford grabbed five for 32 as Barbados Youth fell for 91 in their second innings, leaving Pickwick just six for victory.

Pickwick's second win of the season was achieved just after tea while it was the fourth defeat for Barbados Youth.

At Bank Hall:

Half-centuries from Ryan Hinds, Jamal Smith and Alcindo Holder, spurred Empire to first innings lead after rain again reduced play in the pre-tea session.

Play started just over an hour-and-a-half late at 1.03 p.m. with Empire resuming on 143 for four off 43 overs.

They declared at 253 for six declared off 74 overs in reply to Maple's first innings of 245 all out.

Left-hander Hinds topscored with 71 off 87 balls from his overnight 48. He struck eight threes and three fours.

Skipper Smith, who started the day on 30, made 59 in 258 minutes with nine boundaries while Holder lashed 52 off 50 balls including seven three and five fours.

Off-spinner Ramon Greaves took four for 76.

Maple were 36 for three in their second innings when play ended early at 4.47 p.m.

At Desmond Haynes Oval:

After taking first innings points, Carlton were blunted in their quest for a win against BDFSP, leaving both teams still bothered about being relegated.

Carlton carried their overnight score from 215 for three to 334 all out for a first innings lead of 61.

Off-spinner Ackeem Clinkett took five for 48.

Despite losing early wickets cheaply, BDFSP rallied to 145 for nine when fading light ended the match.

At Queen's Park:

Play was abandoned at 2 p.m. without a ball bowled because of wet conditions.

Spartan, who took first innings lead, had been set 171 for victory and were four without loss.

LIME, however, have protested and are claiming the maximum 20 points after Spartan were unable to produce a new ball at the start of the second innings just before the close of play on the first day.
