Maple beat St. Catherine to take over lead in Elite division as UWI upstage Carlton in rain-hit Series 8

Bridgetown, Barbados, September 1 - (www.bcacricket.org) - CGI Maple overtook ICBL Empire at the top of the BCA LIME Elite division championship table by one point following a sensational five-wicket win with four balls remaining against struggling Republic Bank St. Catherine at Bayfield on the third and final day of the rain-hit Series 8 today.

But mixed feelings were expressed in many quarters after three declarations on the same day led to a 50-run win for title holders Sagicor Life UWI over relegation-worried Carlton at Desmond Haynes Oval.

With rain having a telling impact and desperation clearly swaying the thinking of teams either challenging for the title or trying to avoid demotion, the results at Bayfield and even more significantly at Desmond Haynes Oval led to great debate among players and pundits alike.

After hitting back with the help of a dramatic batting collapse to take a 45-run first innings lead, St. Catherine declared their second innings on 67 for two in nine overs, setting Maple 113 to win in 18 overs.

Maple took up the challenge from the very first over in which 13 runs were scored off skipper and left-arm spinner Derick Bishop and lifted by an unbeaten 45 off 41 balls from experienced all-rounder Khalid Springer, they were able to attain 18 points all told in recording their third win of a most intriguing season to move to 86 points.

It was the third defeat for St. Catherine who picked up seven points but still remain one from the bottom of the table on 45 points with their next clash against third-placed UWI at 3Ws Oval.

Empire, who had led the table from the third series, disappointed with the bat and managed only five points after rock-bottom Guardian General Barbados Youth who are exempted from demotion, gained first innings honours at Lester Vaughan, Cane Garden.

With not a ball bowled on the second day at Desmond Haynes Oval, UWI declared their first innings at the first day close of 151 for five off 38 overs.

Carlton responded with 161 for one declared in 24 overs and UWI also faced 24 overs in their second innings before declaring at 195 for seven.

Set 186 in 25 overs for victory, Carlton folded for 135 in 19.2 overs as seamer Carlos Brathwaite, with five for 51 and his cousin Jonathan Carter (four for 12) took the spotlight.
