Marshall, Yearwood shine as Alleyne Alumni beat Foundation C Old Scholars in Joel Garner T20

Bridgetown, Barbados, February 28 -(www.bcacricket.org) - Last year’s runners-up Alleyne Alumni remained in contention for a quarter-final place in the fourth annual Christ Church Foundation School Joel Garner Twenty20 tapeball tournament with a 46-run win over Granville Archer/Samuel Drayton Brothers Foundation C Old Scholars at Briar Hall on Monday night.

But Kenrick Marshall’s team must now anxiously await the outcome of the last preliminary match in the Lewin/Gilpin Jones Brothers Zone B between Combermere Old Scholars and unbeaten newcomers St. Leonard’s Old Scholars at the same venue next Monday, March 5, to know their fate.

Alleyne’s win was their second, taking them to six points as beleaguered Foundation C Old Scholars were condemned to their third defeat and finished without a point.

It means that the onus is now on Combermere Old Scholars, who have three points, to beat St. Leonard’s, who are on six points, and wipe out Alleyne Alumni by way of a superior net run rate.

Marshall, one of the most outstanding all-rounders in the BCA Division 1 championship in the past three decades, joined fellow Police player Dwayne Yearwood in producing telling performances with both bat and ball on Monday night.

After winning the toss, Alleyne recovered from 21 for three in the third over as pacer Darren Alleyne bowled all three batsmen – Orlando Walkes, Sean Merritt and Marty Griffith – in an impressive spell from the southern end, to score 137 for seven off 20 overs.

The tall, strongly-built Marshall, who went to the crease at No. 7, hit the topscore of 29 which included three sixes and one four. He and Yearwood, who played for Barbados in the regional one-day tournament in Guyana in 2008, added 50 in 6.3 overs for the sixth wicket.

Yearwood made 15 not out, while the other double-figure contributors were experienced Pickwick left-hander Jason Gilkes (14) and another left-hander with Division 1 experience for YMPC, Adrian Maynard (ten).

Alleyne, who bowled his heart out and picked up two wickets off the fourth and last balls of the very first over, took four for 32 of four overs.

Foundation C Old Scholars then collapsed after an opening partnership of 39 in 8.1 overs between Antonio Sargeant and Eric Batson, and fell for 91 in 18.5 overs.

Sargeant scored 14 and Nicholas Brathwaite, 11, at No. 3.

Marshall, as mean as ever with his seamers, grabbed three for seven off 3.5 overs while Yearwood had three for 19 off two overs.

Five more matches are left in the preliminaries before the knockout stage begins on Friday, March 9.

Four matches are slated for Dover for the rest of the week. On Wednesday, February 29, in the Barry Gaskin/Bran Williams Zone D, first-timers Deighton Griffith Old Scholars are highly favoured to roll over Harrison College Old Scholars and become the first team to win three matches.

There are crucial matches on Thursday and Friday.

On Thursday, in the Irvine King/Hugh Barker Zone C, Livy Hoyte Foundation School oppose Lodge Old Scholars in a rescheduled match.

Then on Friday, Adrian Grant Police meet Lodge in the first match of the traditional double-header, and Joseph Harris/Anderson Cummins Foundation B Old Scholars clash with title holders Fifth Avenue Fashions Coleridge & Parry Old Scholars in the Lee Harford Skeete/Lewiston Wellington Zone A, with a win for either team ensuring a place in the last eight.
