Police keep on course for BCA Upper Intermediate division title

Bridgetown, Barbados, November 20 – (www.bcacricket.org) - Front-runners Seven Seas Police are well set to capture the 2011 BCA Upper Intermediate division title and regain a spot in the Division 1 championship next season.

At stumps on Saturday, November 19, on a rain-affected second and penultimate day of the ninth and final series, Police were in an excellent position to force and outright win against relegation-bound Pine Hill Dairy St. John Cultural.

Meanwhile, fellow title contenders Counter Point Wanderers made some ground but not significant progress against Guardian General Barbados Youth.

Ince Transport MTW, the only other team with a mathematical chance of taking the title had their hopes dashed as they were held up by J O’Neale Building and Maintenance Yorkshire.

The opening day’s play in all the matches was completely washed out on Saturday November 12.

At Weymouth, Police who started the series on 39 points, bundled out St. John Cultural who opted to bat, for a meagre 67, after the start play was delayed by 75 minutes due to wet conditions.

When fading light halted play, Police were within seven runs of taking vital first innings lead as they closed on 61 without loss. When play resumes next Saturday captain Roger Williams will begin on 42 and Stephen Payne on 19. A victory for Police will carry them to an unassailable 47 points leaving Wanderers and MTW to battle for second spot.

At Dayrells Road, wet conditions caused the start to be delayed by 80 minutes. Sent in, Barbados Youth struggled to 75 for eight from 39 overs. Former Barbados and West Indies all-rounder Ian Bradshaw has so far taken four for 30 and Barbados and West Indies ‘A’ fast bowling all- rounder Jason Holder, three for 23.

Wanderers must win and hope that Police are held to a draw, which seems highly unlikely. If that happen both will teams end on 42 points.

Each side will then have the same amount of wins (four). The second tie- breaker under rule no. 19 (b) of the playing conditions states: The team which has the highest net runs per wicket ratio during the season shall be the winner.

At Friendship, fourth-placed Yorkshire batted almost the entire day, which was free of rain to post 198 after they were sent in by MTW. The visitors replied with 44 for two including the key wicket of consistent all- rounder Kevin Gittens for 13.

Standings (After Round 8)

Police 39, Wanderers 34, MTW 32, Yorkshire 20, Barbados Youth 18, BCL 17, Carlton 16, Dover 14, St. John Cultural 10, Alexandra 9.

NB: The last place three teams with the exception of Barbados Youth will be demoted to Intermediate in 2012.
