Jamaica draft in Campbell for key WICB first-class battle with Barbados
Bridgetown, Barbados, February 17 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Former national junior batsman John Ross Campbell has been drafted into the Jamaica 13-man squad as a replacement for the injured Shawn Findlay for the crucial top-of-the-table sixth round WICB first-class showdown with Barbados in Trinidad, starting Friday, February 19.
Campbell (not to be confused with his namesake and compatriot, 16-year-old John Dillon Campbell, who represented West Indies in the recent ICC Youth World Cup in New Zealand) is an attacking right-hand batsman who played for Jamaica at both the Under-15 and Under-19 levels.
“I am really looking forward to it. I have always looked forward to representing my country. Now, if I am selected to play, I simply have to make the best of the opportunity.” he was quoted as saying in today’s Jamaica Gleaner.
“There is always going to be some nerves, it's a big opportunity but I will be looking to get over that, go out there and give it my best shot.”
According to The Gleaner, Campbell, who plays for Melbourne, was an outstanding performer at the national one-day trials last October and despite not being as impressive in the four-day trials, which took place a month later, he does not feel he will be out of his depth.
“It is a big step up, but I was coping well with the players at national trials and should I get the opportunity I should be able to (cope).”
Jamaica, champions for the past two years, are at the top of the seven-team standings with a maximum 48 points after four matches, while Barbados are second on 45 points from five matches. The match is slated for the Sir Frank Worrell Memorial ground at University of the West Indies in St. Augustine.
For Barbados to capture the title, they must gain full points without being led on first innings and then hope that Jamaica lose or are led on first innings in their final match against a beefed-up Trinidad & Tobago team in Grenada at Progress Park, St Andrew's, starting February 26.
Jamaica and Barbados are now the only title contenders. (See standings and remaining matches below).
