Rampant Roach grabs career-best 7-23 as Barbados beat CCC by eight wickets

Charlestown, Nevis, January 18 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Gifted West Indies fast bowler Kemar Roach grabbed a career-best seven for 23 to set up victory for Barbados by eight wickets over Combined Campuses & Colleges (CCC) on the fourth and final day of their second round match in the 2010 West Indies Cricket Board first-class championship at Elquemedo Willett Park here today.

Bowling with pace, accuracy and swing, the 21-year-old Roach jolted the CCC batsmen, with five of his victims being bowled and other two leg before wicket.

Facing a first innings deficit of 88, CCC were fired out for 187 in their second innings. The last five wickets crashed for seven runs with Roach grabbing four of them.

Set 100 to win in 28 overs, Barbados raced to 100 for two in 17 overs.

Opener Dale Richards hit an unbeaten 55 and captain Ryan Hinds was on two.

Jason Haynes was bowled by left-arm spinner Kavesh Kantasingh for 13 with the score 38 after five overs and Kirk Edwards was caught on the midwicket boundary by Gavin Wallace off off-spinner Ryan Austin for 24 (84-2 in the 14th over).

After the third day’s play was completely washed out, Barbados made hay while the sun shone and by lunch had reduced CCC to 106 for five with Roach taking three of the wickets and the other two going to leg-spinner Nikolai Charles.

Simon Jackson was caught by wicket-keeper Patrick Browne off Charles’ first delivery for 17 with the score 35; his opening partner and fellow left-hander Omar Phillips was caught at slip by Richards off Charles for 20 (54-2); Romel Currency was bowled by Roach for 11 (80-3); captain Floyd Reifer was leg before wicket by Roach without offering a stroke for three (95-4) and Nekoli Parris was also leg before wicket by Roach for 29 (101-5).

Wicket-keeper/batsman Chadwick Walton and fast bowler Kevin McClean then frustrated Barbados with a sixth wicket partnership of 79 but once Roach was recalled late in the post lunch session, the innings went into swift decline.

Roach broke the Walton-McClean stand by bowling McClean for 25 and soon followed with the wicket of Walton, who was also bowled for the topscore of 43.

The tail-enders pushed and prodded as just one run was scored in half-hour after tea as Roach hit the stumps of Jason Bennett and Kantasingh after Wallace was run out.

The win was Barbados’ first of the season and carried them to 15 points, while CCC remained on 12.
