BCA Director of Coaching Henderson Springer named WI assistant coach for ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa
September 8 - (www.bcacricket.org) - Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Director of Coaching Henderson Springer has been named as assistant coach of the West Indies team for the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa, starting later this month.
Springer, a former Barbados off-spinning all-rounder, previously worked as coach of the West Indies ‘A’ team in 2006 and assistant coach of the West Indies team in 2007.
The 45-year-old Springer said he was pleased to be part of the team and is looking forward to helping with the development of the players. He was part of a week-long camp in Barbados last week and said the players looked eager and enthusiastic.
“It is always an honour to represent the West Indies in any capacity and I am looking forward to the assignment. This is another chance for me to help with the development of West Indies cricket,” Springer said in a release from the West Indies Cricket Board.
“The players have put in a lot of hard work this (last) week and I want to see them playing to their full potential. After we arrive in South Africa we have another two weeks before the start of the Tournament (ICC CT09) and that will give us more opportunities to get acclimatised and ready for the challenge ahead.”
There are five Barbadians including captain and veteran batsman Floyd Reifer in the 15-man West Indies team. The others are opening batsman Dale Richards and fast bowlers Tino Best, Kemar Roach and the uncapped Kevin McClean, who was a late replacement for injured Jamaican pacer Daren Powell.
The Champions Trophy runs from September 22 to October 5.
The West Indies team arrived in South Africa on Monday morning, September 7, and will have a camp in the city of Potchefstroom until September 16. The team will then have warm-up matches against South Africa (September 18) and Sri Lanka (September 20).
