Carlton maintain lead in BCA Caribbean Alliance Insurance Div. 1 standings with three-point advantage

August 30 (www.bcacricket.org) - TeleBarbados Carlton agonisingly failed to take first innings points over title holders BNB St. Catherine at Bayfield but still top the standings in the 2009 BCA Caribbean Alliance Insurance Division 1 championship with an increased three-point advantage over now joint second-placed LIME and Sagicor General UWI following the rain-shortened seventh round of matches which ended today.

Marlon Graham’s team picked up seven points (four for batting and three for bowling) to move to 67 points, but needed only one more wicket to grab another three points as play ended in fading light.

St. Catherine, lifted by a century from wicket-keeper/batsman Patrick Browne and 92 by all-rounder Kenroy Williams, finished on 272 for nine in reply to a first innings total of 350 for eight declared.

National player Browne, who made 132 in three and three-quarter hours, hit 17 fours as he and Williams added 222 for the third wicket. Browne reached his century in 140 minutes off 134 balls with 15 boundaries.

Once he and Williams were parted, St. Catherine struggled with the only other double-figure contributor being all-rounder Joel Michael Leacock (15).

On reflection, Carlton must again be kicking themselves for the third time this season in their timing of a declaration, having started the final day’s play on 320 for seven with the full batting points already attained.

LIME gained ten points over neighbours Banks at the Brewery to move from third position to 64 points and sustain their significant jump over the last three rounds which include two outright wins.

Leg-spinner Nikolai Charles had a memorable match for LIME as he became the first bowler for the season to take 50 wickets following his five for 36 in the first innings.

Charles now has 52 scalps after picking up two for 34 in the second innings. He also made an unbeaten 32.

UWI were led on first innings by rock-bottom Inspire Sports Wanderers at 3Ws Oval, falling for 145 from an overnight 35 for one in response to a total of 156.

Off-spinner Gary Belle was the wrecker with a career-best five for 11 off five overs.

ESA Field Pickwick moved from fifth to fourth position on 58 points, replacing finalists of the previous two seasons, CGI Maple, while Caribbean Lumber YMPC eased from seventh to fifth.

Both Pickwick and YMPC gained nine points all told against BDFSP and ICBL Empire.

Play on the opening day was washed out in all of the matches, apart from Empire-YMPC at Bank Hall.

The last three in the 16-team championship (Guardian General Barbados Youth are exempted) will be demoted.
